The installation process for wooden cladding must be done by a professional. For optimal results, it would be advisable that an expert must install cladding to make sure it fits together perfectly.
Timber cladding is typically designed to be used horizontally. With only certain profiles is it recommended to use vertical beams so make sure you check this before you start.
The panels are installed by fixing it to a backing lath structure. Every individual panel should be fixed individually. For information on a Timber Framed Extension, visit https://www.timberpride.co.uk/oak-frame-extension/
Fixing
Fixing must sit flush to the board surface. Fixing nails to the wood by hand is recommended. Make sure there are no nails that are overdriven which can lead to separation or visible damage to the panel.
There are two methods you can use to install wood cladding: Face fixing or Secret fixing
Face Fix – nails are fixed through the thickest part of the cladding, with each board remaining independent. This applies to every profile width of more than 100 mm.
Secret Fix – To improve the profile, a single fix can be used through the bevel. This applies to any profile width up to 100 mm.
When installing the first board at every elevation, this would require a face fixing.
Wall structures
Installation will differ depending on the primary wall structure. All projects will need to be analysed by an expert to get a feel for the exact nature of the project.
External Walls – For cladding external walls, a batten must be attached to the wall and then the cladding is fixed to these battens.
Wood Frame Wall – To clad a wood frame wall, you need to attach a lath to studs in the wall. You then can then fix the batten cladding to this. You will also need a breather membrane to enable air flow.
Cavity Walls – You must install the battens with plugs and screws. Then the cladding can be fixed to a batten.
Understanding the structure and nature of the building wall will ensure that moisture and water vapour is dealt with effectively and there is no impact on the cladding.
Feature wall
There might be different features to a wall, such as doors, windows, and flashing which are essential to create an elegant finish. You will want to choose the features to match the cladding and this is something to discuss with your project manager.
Not only is this an important feature for the appearance of the final build, but it is also important to ensure effective water runoff and no gaps for water / dirt to get behind the cladding.
Cladding Wood Maintenance
If you have opted for onsite coating of the cladding, it is advisable to have this done prior to installation.
If the wood cladding is treated and properly installed, can stand last for a long time. It is important to know the treating methods and how to take care of the wood to keep it well preserved.
